RNC Lay Multiple Impaired Driving Charges During Labour Day Weekend

(ST. JOHN’S, NL) – September 4, 2012 - The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has charged numerous individuals with offences related to incidences of impaired operation of a motor vehicle over the last week in and around the St. John’s area.

On Saturday, September 1, 2012 at approximately 2:55 am RNC patrol services officers responded to a single vehicle collision on New Cove Road in St. John’s. As a result, a 19 year old male was charged with impaired driving and failing the breathalyzer. He was released to appear in court at a later date.

Also on September 1, 2012 the RNC received information from a concerned member of the public with regards to a suspected impaired driver. At approximately 6:25 pm officers responded to the area of Penny Cresent and Torbay Road and located the suspect vehicle. As a result of the investigation, a 19 year old male was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired, operation of a motor vehicle with over 80mg of alcohol and failing to remain at the scene of a collision. The male was released to appear in court at a later date.

On Sunday, September 2, 2012 at approximately 9:20 pm police conducted a traffic stop on the Goulds By-Pass Road. During the encounter officers administered a roadside test which resulted in a 49 year old St. John’s male driver being issued a seven day driving suspension.

On Monday, September 3, 2012 at approximately 10:30 am police responded to a complaint from a concerned citizen about persons throwing beer bottles out of a vehicle being operated in the community of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove. The vehicle was located and an investigation led to a 22 year old male operator of the vehicle being charged with impaired driving and operation over 80mgs. The male was released to appear in court at a later date.

Also, on September 3, 2012 at approximately 2:32 pm the RNC received information from a concerned member of the public with regards to a suspected impaired driver near Paddy’s Pond on the TCH. The vehicle was located in Mount Pearl a short while later. The investigation led to the 22 year old male operator being charged with impaired driving and operating a motor vehicle over 80mgs. The male was released to appear in court at a later date.

In total, over the last long weekend the RNC have charged five individuals with impaired driving related offenses, three of which were a direct result of information received from members of the public.
