About Us

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is Newfoundland and Labrador’s Provincial Police Service. The RNC is a modern, progressive, police agency that responds to the needs of the community by seeking advice and input from those it serves.

The RNC is a fully integrated police service made up of approximately 420 police officers and 125 civilian employees who are dedicated to ‘Building Safe and Healthy Communities Together’.

The RNC provides service to 17 communities in three jurisdictions serving approximately 245,000 people.

History

The RNC is one of the oldest police agencies in North America with a policing lineage dating back to 1729. In the 19th century, the RNC was modeled after the Royal Irish Constabulary with the secondment in 1844 of Timothy Mitchell of the Royal Irish Constabulary to be Inspector General. It was after the British forces at Fort Townshend withdrew, that in 1871, the Newfoundland Constabulary was born. The ‘Royal’ designation was added over 100 years later in 1979 by Queen Elizabeth II. The first female RNC officer was not sworn in until 1980.
