(St. John’s, NL) December 9, 2025 – With the holiday shopping and shipping season in full swing, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding residents to follow some simple steps to help keep deliveries safe.
So-called ‘porch pirates’ are lurking trying to snatch unattended packages. The RNC is encouraging everyone to plan ahead and consider:
- Using delivery tracking and alerts. Enable text or email notifications so you can know when your parcel is arriving.
- Choose a secure delivery option. Have deliveries sent to a workplace, a designated pick up location, or a friend’s home where someone will be able to receive the item.
- Request a signature upon delivery, especially for valuable items. Otherwise, use the package hold option to pick up at a time convenient for you.
- Schedule deliveries. Co-ordinate delivery times for a period when you know you will be home.
- Install a security or doorbell camera. Visible cameras can deter thieves and help identify a suspect if a theft occurs.
- Get to know your neighbors. Consider arranging for a trusted neighbor to collect your package if you’re not home.
To report suspicious activity call the RNC at 709-729-8000 or use the online reporting system.
Let’s all work together to keep our community safe this holiday season!
