The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is responsible for investigating serious crimes within our communities. The CID is comprised of numerous sections and most members of the CID are plainclothes investigators. The CID is comprised of the following sections:

Major Crime Unit
The Major Crime Unit investigates the most serious offences which include but are not limited to; homicide, manslaughter, attempted murder, weapons offences, serious assaults, home invasions, armed robberies, extortion, criminal harassment, elder abuse, and missing persons.
Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit
The Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit investigates the most sensitive matters which include assaults against children and sexual assaults. In addition to the investigators in this unit, there is a dedicated officer that deals solely with the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development (CSSD) to ensure the safety of children at risk. Members of this unit are skilled investigators that use a trauma-informed approach when dealing with victims of crime.
General Investigation Unit
The General Investigation Unit investigates matters which involve commercial armed robberies, residential and commercial break and enters, stolen vehicles, and arson.
Economic Crime Unit
The Economic Crime Unit investigates financial crimes, which include significant frauds and forgeries.
Investigative Interviewing Unit
The Investigative Interviewing Unit is responsible for assisting officers with victim, witness, and suspect interviews and also provides interview training to members within our organization. The members of this unit have specialized training in interviewing, statement analysis, and polygraph.
Judicial Authorization Unit
The Judicial Authorization Unit is responsible for providing training to our members with respect to judicial authorizations and search and seizure. Commonly referred to as warrants, judicial authorizations are a system of prior approvals by a Judge to permit search and seizures. This unit also provides assistance to Operational Patrol Services and the officers of the CID by drafting judicial authorizations for investigations.
Criminal Intelligence Unit
The Criminal Intelligence Unit is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating intelligence to try to identify and prevent criminal activity.
Weapons and Drug Enforcement Unit
The Weapons and Drug Enforcement Unit was created in October 2023 following a successful pilot project. This unit works to stop gun crime and remove drugs and weapons from our communities. It focuses on individuals and groups that show tendencies for violence in order to curb the violence before serious offences can occur. This unit is larger than previous units dedicated to similar criminal activity.
Mobile Support Unit
The Mobile Support Unit provides support to police investigations through the use of surveillance, criminal intelligence gathering, and the collection of evidence.
Technical Investigation Unit
The Technical Investigation Unit provides support to police investigations through the use of electronic investigative techniques.
Computer Forensics Unit
The Computer Forensics Unit provides technical support to police investigations through the seizure and examination of digital evidence. This unit extracts and forensically examines data from computers, digital media sources, cellular telephones and other handheld digital devices.
Video Services Unit
The Video Services Unit supports police investigations through the collection and forensic video analysis of video surveillance.
Forensic Identification Unit
The Forensic Identification Unit is a specialized section that provides investigative support to police investigations. This unit provides crime scene documentation including the identification, preservation, collection and examination of crime scenes, and the processing of evidence.
Integrated Internet Child Exploitation Unit
The Integrated Internet Child Exploitation Unit is an RNC and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) joint unit that is responsible for the investigation of online child exploitation which includes but is not limited to; the transmission, production, possessions and accessing of child pornography, voyeurism, publication of intimate images without consent, making sexually explicit material available to a child, luring a child, agreement or arrangement to commit a sexual offence against a child. The unit is also responsible for the prevention of online abuse through public education initiatives and assisting the RNC and RCMP detachments with online child abuse investigations.
