(St. John’s, NL) December 11, 2025 — The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has charged a man in connection with indecent acts that occurred at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in St. John’s.
The RNC Child Abuse and Sexual Assault (CASA) Unit was tasked to investigate the report of an inmate who was committing indecent acts in the presence of staff and other inmates over a series of days in July.
On Wednesday (Dec. 10), 34-year-old Stephen Hopkins was charged with five counts of an indecent act. The accused appeared in Provincial Court in relation to the charges today.
All survivors of sexual violence are encouraged to reach out for help from a trusted resource as soon as it is safe to do so. Members of the CASA Unit are available to speak with anyone that has information or questions. With a trauma-informed focus, officers educate and inform survivors of their legal and investigative options while also directing them to appropriate resources based on their individual situation or needs.
