(St. John’s, NL) June 25, 2025 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding the public of the importance of safe driving with an anticipated increase in summer traffic and outdoor activities.
Summer is an exciting time of year, especially for school-aged children. With warmer temperatures, residents can expect to see pedestrians and bicyclists, more frequent activity near roadways, and an overall higher volume of traffic.
The RNC is encouraging all road users to:
- Reduce speeds in residential areas, especially around playgrounds or areas where children frequently gather.
- Watch out for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
- Avoid distractions and stay alert. Place your phone out of arms reach. Take frequent breaks if driving long distances.
- Be cautious of wildlife, particularly at dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active.
- Check road conditions. Plan your route to avoid unexpected detours or delays.
- Never drive impaired. Always have a designated driver or use alternative transportation.
With all of the excitement of summer and the end of the school year, please make safety your summer priority.
The RNC continues to urge the public to report unsafe driving behaviours directly to police. Anyone with information is asked to call 911. To report anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
