RNC Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

(St. John’s, NL), April 14, 2018 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Traffic Services Section is investigating a fatal Motor Vehicle Collision that occurred in St. John’s on Friday evening.

On Friday, April 13, 2018, just before 10:30 p.m. an RNC Patrol Officer travelling south on Hamlyn Road in St. John’s attempted to initiate a traffic safety stop with a vehicle that was also headed south on Hamlyn Road. The vehicle, a Honda Accord, failed to stop for the officer and collided with a west bound SUV travelling on Canada Drive.

There were four individuals in the Accord, a 17 year old female driver, as well as two male youths and a 19 year old woman of St. John’s, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital and the two male passengers received non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV, who was the lone occupant, sustained minor injuries.

As in all cases where an RNC officer is present at an incident that results in a serious injury or death, the Chief of Police has requested that the Department of Justice and Public Safety engage Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) to conduct an independent investigation. Investigators with SIRT are expected to be in St. John’s today.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision or any residents of Hamlyn Road who may have home security cameras that captured the seconds leading up to the collision are asked to call RNC Accident Investigators at 709-729-8000.
