RNC Investigating Suspicious Fires

(St. Johns, NL) August 13, 2025 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is seeking help from the public following suspicious fires in St. John’s.

In a two-hour period between 10:30 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 12) and 12:30 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 13), four brush fires were observed in downtown St. John’s within blocks of one another on Lemarchant Road and New Gower Street.

Fortunately, due to the quick response of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department and members of the public, there were no injuries and no structural damage reported.

Investigators suspect one person is responsible. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000. To report a fire call 911.

A fire ban is in effect across Newfoundland and Labrador. Open fires are not permitted. In cases where it is believed an offence has occurred, police will investigate under its authority as described in the Forestry Act. Those found in violation of the fire ban could face fines ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 and imprisonment.
