RNC Investigating the Discovery of Human Remains

(St. John’s, NL), May 31, 2017 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Major Crime Unit is investigating the discovery of human remains in the Mount Scio Road Area of St. John’s.

Yesterday evening, just before 9:00pm, RNC officers with Patrol Services Division, Criminal Investigation Division and Forensic Identification Services responded to a wooded area near Mount Scio Road to a report that an individual had discovered what appeared to be human remains.

Due to the location of the discovery and the lighting, the scene was held overnight by officers and the investigation is ongoing this morning. The identity of the individual, the circumstances surrounding their death or how long they had been there are not yet known by investigators who are working closely with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
