(Churchill Falls, NL) July 31, 2025 –The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding boaters to stay safe on the water and follow all boating regulations.
During National Drowning Prevention Week (July 20-26), RNC Churchill Falls members conducted a boat patrol training exercise, along with local volunteer Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR), to raise awareness of the importance of boating safety.
Boating can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but there are potential risks and dangers associated with water activities. The RNC is reminds all boaters of the following safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:
– Always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device.
– Let a family member or friend know your plans and when to expect your return.
– Keep your speeds reasonable and be respectful of other boaters.
– Check your safety gear before heading out and ensure you have the proper equipment in case of an emergency.
– Know the weather forecast and be prepared for sudden changes.
Boaters are also reminded of the risks of alcohol and drug-impaired boating. Impaired boating is a criminal offence and can have consequences far beyond the loss of boating privileges. Combined with sun, wind and waves, the effects of alcohol and drugs on the water can be deadly.
If you suspect impaired boating operation or observe unsafe operation, please call 911 or your local police detachment.
