(Labrador City, NL) May 21, 2025 – After a tip from the public, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has ticketed a Labrador City driver for passing a school bus.
On Friday (May 16), the RNC received a report related to a vehicle passing a school bus while it was stopped with traffic safety equipment engaged on Bartlett Drive. The bus came to a stop in the area at approximately 8:40 a.m., and after the traffic safety equipment was engaged, a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction, passed the school bus.
Based on the information received, patrol officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle and identify the 24-year-old male operator.
The RNC is reminding drivers that it is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped with its stop sign extended and lights flashing. This includes all lanes. The penalties for passing a school bus are six demerit points and up to $1,200 in fines. Motorists are advised to reduce their speeds in school zones and obey the posted speed limits. Fines for speeding in school zones are double that of a regular speeding ticket. Additionally, failing to stop for a crossing guard can cost you two demerit points and an associated fine. Be extra alert in school zones and slow down.
The RNC continues to urge the public to report unsafe driving directly to police by calling 911. To report anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
