RNC Warns of the Dangers of Distracted Driving

(St. John’s, NL) April 3, 2025 — The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding motorists that any distraction that takes your attention away from the driving task, even for a second, significantly increases the risk of a collision.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. With almost all of the population now in possession of a mobile phone, plus new digital display options for vehicles, drivers have more distractions than ever before. Interacting with passengers, changing the radio station, eating, drinking and grooming are all considered distracted driving.

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of death and serious injury on our province’s roadways – tragedies that are 100 per cent preventable. Please remember to:

  • Keep your phone out of reach so you are not tempted to use it.
  • Pull off the roadway if you need to talk or text.
  • Pre-program your radio and GPS.
  • Avoid eating, drinking or grooming while driving.
  • Talk to your children about the importance of staying focused on the drive, and set a good example by avoiding distractions.

The RNC continues to urge the public to report dangerous and impaired driving directly to police. Anyone with information is asked to call 911. To report anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
