Snowmobile Goes Through Ice in Labrador City

(Labrador City, NL) January 12, 2025 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) assisted snowmobilers when their machine became submerged over the weekend in Labrador.

On Sunday, around 5:30 p.m., the RNC received a report of a snowmobile that broke through the ice between Harry Lake and Little Wabush Lake. Three occupants were on the snowmobile when the machine and the attached sled became submerged. No serious injuries were reported however, the occupants were sent to hospital for assessment as a precaution.

Given the late start to the snowmobile season this year, RNC in Labrador West are urging caution when operating snowmobiles on bodies of water due to low water levels. The rivers, in particular, have multiple open areas. Riders should always check ice thickness before venturing onto what appears to be frozen bodies of water. At this time, the RNC recommends rides in the Labrador West region remain solely on groomed trails.

In the event of an emergency always call 911.
