’Tis the Season to Secure Your Home: RNC Offers Holiday Home Safety Advice

(St. John’s, NL) December 10, 2025 – With the busy holiday season upon us, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding residents to take some simple proactive steps to help keep their homes safe and secure.

While many people are travelling, shopping or attending gatherings, there are always festive opportunists who end up on the naughty list for stealing holiday cheer.

The RNC recommends taking a few extra minutes to help prevent property-related crimes by:

  • Keeping gifts and valuables out of sight.
  • Never store house or car keys in your vehicle or within arms-reach of a window or door.
  • Ensure the inside and outside of your home is well-lit.
  • Keep windows and doors locked at all times, even when you’re home.
  • Keep items such as tools and ladders securely stored so they cannot be used to gain access to your home.
  • If you are away from home, use light timers or motion-activated sensors. Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to check on your property while you’re away, and never advertise your absence on social media.
  • Report suspicious activity to the RNC at 709-729-8000.

The RNC wishes everyone a safe and peaceful holiday season!
