RNC Appealing for Information after Driver Fled from Police

(St. John’s, NL) July 31, 2026 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is looking for information from the public after a motorcycle fled from police in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s.

On Thursday (July 30) at approximately 5 p.m., Operational Patrol Services received a tip from the public of a suspicious motorcycle near Healeys Pond in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s. Around 5:20 p.m., officers observed a male operating a motorcycle without a helmet on Thorburn Road near Bennett’s Road. The motorcycle travelled east on Thorburn Road at a high rate of speed and proceeded eastbound onto the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) and exited onto Allandale Road. The vehicle was not being pursued by police.

Minutes later, officers observed the motorcycle on the westbound on ramp from Allandale Road to the TCH. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver fled on foot to a trailway. Police Dog Services were engaged however the driver was not located. The motorcycle was seized.

Investigating officers are seeking any witnesses or video footage (CCTV, dash camera, cell phone) of the incident. The suspect vehicle was a red Yamaha motorcycle bearing Newfoundland and Labrador license plate MDS 882 and was being operated by a male wearing a black shirt, light pants, and beige boots.
