Frequently Asked Questions

If this is an emergency and you require an immediate police response, please call 911. RNC online incident reporting is intended for non-emergency complaints. Non-emergent reports can also be filed by calling your local detachment.

  1. Why should I use the RNC’s online reporting system?

Online reporting is for non-emergency situations such as lost or stolen property, minor thefts, fraud, property damage, and minor motor-vehicle collisions. You should only use the online reporting portal for incidents where an immediate officer presence is not required. For a crime in progress always call 911. By using the online reporting portal, you help free up emergency lines for urgent calls which allows our officers to focus on critical situations that require immediate police intervention.

Online reporting is easy to use and reports can be submitted anytime, anywhere, without waiting on hold.

  2. What crimes can be reported online?

The RNC online reporting portal is intended for non-emergency complaints. Crimes that can be reported online included:

    • Lost property
    • Theft under $5,000
    • Theft from a motor vehicle
    • Property damage
    • Damage to a vehicle
    • Motor vehicle collisions
    • Fraud under $5,000

Please note: Break and enters (from a home or commercial property) and thefts of motor vehicles SHOULD NOT be reported online. Additionally, if you believe there is physical evidence available (fingerprints, items left behind etc.), do not use the online reporting system.

  3. Why can’t I report my incident type online?

Not all incidents can be reported online due to the nature of investigation required. Non-emergent reports can be made by calling your local detachment. In the event of an emergency, always call 911.

  4. What do I do if my incident doesn’t match the list for online reporting?

Not all incidents can be reported online due to the nature of investigation required. Non-emergent reports can be made by calling your local detachment. In the event of an emergency, always call 911.

  5. What do I do if I find something the suspect left behind?

Items left behind may provide valuable evidence in helping police identify the suspect(s). If any items are discovered that do not belong to you (e.g. tools, documents, clothing), do not use the online reporting system and call your local detachment to report your incident.

  6. What do I do if I have surveillance video of the incident?

Make a copy of the video and save it. Complete the online report and indicate there is digital evidence available then wait to be contacted for follow-up. Provide the video to the officer assigned to your file. Please note, some home monitoring systems have automatic record and retention schedules. We suggest reviewing your home monitoring systems as soon as possible following the incident.

  7. How does online reporting work?

You will be guided through a series of steps to complete your RNC online report. It takes approximately 10 minutes. Once you have submitted your report you will receive an automated message to indicate the report has been filed and you will receive an e-mail with your file number. All online reports are considered in the order they are received. If you selected ‘yes’ for police officer follow-up, you will be contacted via e-mail or phone.

Please wait until you are contacted by an officer before providing further information. Do not submit duplicate online reports for the same complaint.

  8. Is the online reporting tool a 24 hour service?

The online reporting system allows users to report non-emergent incidents anytime, anywhere, without waiting on hold. Using the online reporting system frees-up officers and 911 lines for emergencies.

  9. Who can file an online report?

Reports must be filed by the complainant – that is the person the incident happened to, also known as the victim. Exceptions are permitted when assisting someone with filing their report. This can include filing on behalf of, or assisting, a minor, elderly person, or vulnerable person.

  10. Do I need to be the victim/complainant to submit the online report?

Yes, as this will help reduce duplication of files. Exceptions are permitted when assisting someone with filing their report. This can include filing on behalf of, or assisting, a minor, elderly person, or vulnerable person.

  11. Why am I required to provide an e-mail address to file an online report?

An e-mail address is needed for follow-up purposes. It also helps us to limit or identify false reports. Filing a false police report is a criminal offence subject to prosecution under the Criminal Code of Canada.

  12. How do I know if the incident happened in RNC jurisdiction?

The RNC provides policing services to:

    •  Northeast Avalon (Bauline, Conception Bay South, Flatrock, Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, Mount Pearl, Paradise, Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove, Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, Pouch Cove, St. John’s, Torbay)

  14. What happens after my report is submitted?

All reports filed will be reviewed by a police officer. If you selected ‘yes’ for police officer follow-up, you will be contacted via e-mail or phone. Please wait until you are contacted by an officer before providing further information. Do not submit duplicate online reports for the same complaint.

  15. How do I follow-up on the status of my report?

All information is valuable but you may not hear from us. You will be contacted if further information is needed and notified if your file is concluded. Do not reply via e-mail to the automated message received. Please allow at least three days for your file to be assigned to an officer.

  16. How can I edit or provide more information to my online report after it has been submitted?

Please wait until you are contacted by an officer before providing further information. Do not file another online report.

  17. How fast will my online report be processed?

Reports are reviewed daily and considered in the order they are received, however, given the volume of reports fluctuates, it is difficult to provide specific timelines. Once your file has been assigned to an officer you may be contacted to provide further information. Please allow at least three days for your file to be assigned to an officer.

  18. How do I get a police file number that my insurance company is requesting to process a claim?

Once your report is submitted you will receive an automated message that includes a file number. If you selected ‘yes’ for police officer follow-up, you will be contacted via e-mail or phone.

  19. I’m not comfortable using the online system, can I still file a police report?

Yes, non-emergent matters can still be reported by calling your local detachment or by visiting a detachment in-person. The online system is meant for those who have access and means, and those who are comfortable with online platforms.

  20. Are online reports taken as seriously as those reports made in-person or by phone?

Yes. Although the types of crime reported online are not considered an emergency, we take all reports of crime seriously.
