(St. John’s, NL) October 27, 2026 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
(RNC) is encouraging parents and caregivers to share information with kids to help them recognize personal safety risks, make safe decisions, and stay safe when they’re on their own.
So-called street-proofing can help children identify and react to situations that make them uncomfortable or that are even dangerous when they are away from their guardians.
The RNC suggests parents and caregivers review these tips with their children:
• Memorize key information like, full name, address, and emergency numbers.
• Never approach a stranger.
• Stay away from vehicles you do not know.
• Never get into a stranger’s vehicle.
• Avoid long conversations with strangers.
• Never accept gifts from strangers.
• Always walk to and from school or the bus stop with a parent, sibling, or friends.
• If you are confronted by a stranger, do whatever it takes to get away.
The RNC continues to encourage residents to report suspicious activity by calling 709-729-8000. Crimes in progress should be reported by calling 911.
