The RNC is Reminding Residents to Protect Their Properties this Holiday Season

(St. John’s, NL) December 10, 2024 – Whether spending the holidays at home or going on vacation, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is reminding residents to take steps to secure their homes this festive season.

This time of year is busy for families and those Scrooge-like characters looking to capitalize on distracted homeowners. Take these extra precautions to help improve your home security:

  • Ensure all windows and doors are locked and your alarm system is on.
  • Use curtains and blinds to keep all gifts and valuables out of sight.
  • Ensure the inside and outside of your home is well lit.
  • Do not store spare keys in your vehicle or within arms-reach of a window or door.
  • If you are away from home for an extended period, use light timers or motion-activated sensors. Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to check on your property while you’re away.
  • Outside, store items such as ladders and garbage bins so they cannot be used to gain access to a second-storey.
  • Trim trees and shrubs to remove potential hiding places.

Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police. On behalf of the RNC have a safe and joyous holiday season!
