RNC Urge Motorists to Drive Safe this Long Weekend

(St. John’s, NL) May 15, 2025 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding motorists of the importance of safe driving ahead of the Victoria Day long weekend.

With many people throughout the province hitting the road this long weekend, the RNC want to ensure it is safe and enjoyable for everyone by offering the following tips:

  • Be mindful of all road users. Increase your following distance, reduce your speed and be respectful of those around you.
  • Give yourself extra travel time and expect roads to be busy, especially during peak travel times.
  • Plan your route and check road conditions in advance.
  • Slow down and obey the posted speed limits, even in ideal driving conditions.
  • Stay focused. Avoid distractions that take your mind and eyes off the road.
  • Never drive impaired. Plan ahead for a safe ride home.

Off-road vehicle travel can be a great way to explore the outdoors however these machines can prove dangerous if used improperly.

  • Never operate an off-road vehicle impaired
  • Wear protective equipment including a helmet.
  • Avoid operating in unfamiliar terrain.
  • Travel at a safe speed.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Remember riders under 16 years of age must be supervised.
