(St. John’s, NL) September 18, 2025 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is welcoming two new police dogs to its team.
Police service dogs, Fogo and Mackey, are the first two RNC police dogs to be trained in-house and have officially been sworn-in to service and are reporting for duty.
Named to honour the hometown of his handler, Fogo, is an almost two-year-old German Shepherd-Malinois mix from Holland. Mackey, a two-year-old German Shepherd was born in Slovakia and is named to pay tribute to the contributions of one of the RNC’s founding police dog handler’s, retired Constable Mac Tucker.
Fogo is partnered with Constable Laura Furlong and will serve the Corner Brook Region, while Mackey is teamed with Constable Justin Day on the Northeast Avalon.
Being a police dog handler is a role truly unique in law enforcement as the relationship between a dog and its handler extends far beyond the shift – they live, train, and work together around the clock, creating a partnership built on trust and communication.
The addition of these new dogs bring the Police Dog Services Unit to five in total as today we also wish PSD Kolt a happy and healthy retirement. Kolt has served the RNC in Corner Brook since 2021 under the guidance of Constable Scott Mosher as his second police dog.
The Police Dog Services Unit is a canine support team used to track suspects and evidence, locate missing persons, and detect drugs, firearms, and explosives. They also work jointly with the RNC Public Order Unit and the RNC Tactics and Rescue Unit.
The RNC thanks all members of the Police Dog Services Unit for their passion and commitment to public safety.
