(St. John’s, NL) January 23, 2026 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has made an arrest following an assault in St. John’s.
Today around 7 a.m., RNC officers responded to a disturbance outside of headquarters where a man was assaulting a civilian employee. A responding officer was also injured during the altercation. During the subsequent arrest, the accused refused to cooperate and attempted to disarm an officer.
The two injured males were taken to hospital for further treatment.
Twenty-two-year-old Jamal Omer has since been charged with aggravated assault, assaulting a peace officer, uttering threats, resisting arrest and disarming a police officer. He was held to appear in court.
Mental health and crisis supports have been offered to staff with clinicians onsite throughout the day.
A review is underway to explore ways to further strengthen employee safety protocol and enhance building security measures to help reduce the risk of similar incidents occurring in the future.
