(St. John’s, NL) June 24, 2026 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding the public of the importance of safe driving as the school year comes to an end and summer traffic and outdoor activities increase.
Summer is an exciting time of year, especially for school-aged children. While kids are naturally eager to enjoy some independence it can sometimes lead to safety taking a back seat which makes it even more important for adults to reinforce safe driving habits.
The RNC is encouraging all road users to:
- Reduce speeds in residential areas, especially around playgrounds or areas where children frequently gather.
- Watch out for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
- Avoid distractions and stay alert. Place your phone out of arms reach.
- Be cautious of wildlife, particularly at dawn and dusk.
- Check road conditions. Plan your route to avoid unexpected detours or delays.
- Never drive impaired. Always have a designated driver or use alternative transportation.
With all the excitement of summer and the end of the school year, please make safety your summer priority.
The RNC continues to urge the public to report unsafe driving behaviours directly to police. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
To provide anonymous information on criminal activity, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
