Tactics and Rescue Unit

Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) members provide expert tactical support services and are devoted to the safe resolution of high-risk incidents.

Some of the most serious threats to peace and order in Newfoundland and Labrador often fall into the TRU team’s area of responsibility.

TRU is comprised of 14 members located on the Northeast Avalon who serve as part of the TRU team as a secondary duty.

TRU is part of an integrated response to high-risk incidents which also includes Incident Command, the Emergency Response Team, K-9 services, technical support selection, Weapons and Drug Enforcement Unit and crisis negotiators.

TRU plays a crucial role in providing support to patrol officers in extreme circumstances such as hostage taking, barricaded persons, search of an armed or dangerous persons, execution of high-risk warrants, high-risk entries, occurrences involving explosives, VIP security, and prisoner escorts.

TRU has travelled throughout the country to assist other policing agencies in high-risk scenarios, such as the 2010 G-20 Toronto Summit.
